You’ve probably walked by Lure and not noticed it. On the corner of Mercer and Prince, its a few steps from Bway/Lafayette, and a block from the apple store (like you never broke 9 ipods before?!). Its (literal) underground location leaves its sprawling windows at foot-level of those walking down the street.
Even before the food arrived, they had me hook-line-and sinker (ugh… bad fish pun.) The interior is made to feel like the inside of a (tasteful) yacht. A sunken dining room, with light emanating from “portholes” in the walls, plus a lounge with much less headroom add to the flavor. Did I mention they managed to play Fastball, The Rolling Stones, and my favorite 90s Duran Duran song in the span of 10 minutes?
While salmon is my favorite fish, it has been done to death; i rarely expect to be surprised by it anymore. Well, Lure has proved me wrong. As a twist on the classic Grilled Salmon with mustard sauce; they instead created a course puree from ground mustard seeds which they described as an “Herb Spätzle”. On top was a bed of snow peas, onions, and “bacon”.
Now… if there’s one thing i know, its bacon. This was not bacon. Lure, don’t be so modest! When you serve me thick and juicy diced pork belly, call it out by name! Delicate fish and hearty red meat on one fork? Yea, its as good as it sounds.
My parents (we were celebrating my father’s 62nd birthday, btw) enjoyed a Lobster Roll and Halibut with Asparagus. Our friend who joined us went with the Roasted Scallops.
I also have to give it up to the staff, who were far friendlier, helpful, and casual than you expect from a restaurant of this reputation. Can’t wait to go back. Highly recommended… but probably only on payday.
