WHAT'S REALLY FOOD?

it’s probably mostly insane to be saddened by the closing of a restaurant you’ve never been to…and never had any chance, anyway.  regardless, i’m sad - el bulli closed its doors today.  if you’ve ever watched this guy, you probably saw the piece he did about it and its chef, ferran adrià.  i’m proud of the old country - spain has been responsible for crazydelicious food for generations and now people are all, it’s the next france or whatever.  i overheard some girl blabbing about the documentary about el bulli like, “uhhh, yeah, it’s like totally about the best restaurant ever in the world or something?”  good job, spain!
to drown my tears in something less michelin-starred, i went to despaña - an outfit on broome street with a million cheeses, olive oils, cured meats to take home and sandwiches to eat in a dining room where they’ve written yelp reviews on a mirror-wall (not kidding, guys).  so, you’re looking at a bocadillo (sandwich!) gallego, with serrano ham, chorizon (literally, “big chorizo!”) and ulloa cheese.  please, drizzle some of the table’s olive oil on the cibatta bread.  it’s a big deal when a sandwich is killer even without being slathered in mayo, so you know this place is what’s up.  on the side, because you can’t tell me not to, i got a pinxto of pulpo (octopus!) with aioli on crispy toast.  if you can’t get a fulbright to eat your way through spain just yet, let’s go hang out at despaña as i order everything in a frightful accent.
